Tesco Opticians Help – Prescription glasses
How to order prescription glasses
Do I need to send you a copy of my prescription?
No – as long as you have a current prescription that is less then two years old. All you need to do is enter the details as you see them into the ordering page, we don't need to see a copy. If you need advice call our helpline for assistance (0845 601 3479). If you are over 70 years of age, your prescription must be less than one year old.
Where do I get a copy of my prescription?
Ask your optician. You should have been given a copy after your eye test. If not you can ask your optician to provide a copy as you are entitled to it.
What is my pupillary distance and how do I get it?
Generally called your 'PD', this is the distance between your pupils (the black circles in the middle of your eye). This may be measured by your optician after your sight test. For most adult men this is 64mm and 60mm for adult women when choosing distance lenses and 4mm less for reading glasses. If your PD is not given on your prescription, please leave the default value selected.
I can't find an 'addition' reading on my prescription?
Your glasses are probably for distance only — don't worry as the 'addition' is only required if the glasses are going to be used for reading or close work. Sometimes opticians use the word 'Add' or 'Near' instead of 'Addition'. Also they may only write it once but it normally applies to both eyes and is almost always the same value for both eyes (eg, if 'Add' +2.50 appears once on your prescription, it should be entered for both eyes).
My prescription falls outside the ranges shown on the site. Can I still order?
At this time we have restricted the prescriptions available on our website to prescriptions of + or - 5 powers and no greater than 2 cyl.
What do the sizes shown on the ‘Frames’ page mean?
The lens size is the width across the widest part of the lens (normally around 50mm). The bridge size is the width of the nose bridge (normally around 20mm). The arm length is the length of each arm. These sizes can usually be found on your current glasses by looking on the inside of the frame (usually the arms) so you can compare these sizes to the sizes shown on the site.
Can I use my contact lens prescription for ordering glasses from you?
There are important differences between a contact lens prescription and a glasses prescription so no, do not use your contact lens prescription. Ask your Optician for further information.
How does the ‘second pair for £10’ offer work?
The discount is applied automatically once you have added two pairs of glasses with the same prescription to your basket. The second pair must be from the same range as the first, or a cheaper one. The total payable, adjusted to reflect the offer, will be displayed when you click the 'View basket/Checkout' button. You can then proceed to make your payment and check out as normal. Please note that lens 'extras' (thin and light lenses, tints, UV coatings, etc.) are still charged at the normal retail price.
How do I collect my glasses?
You will be notified by email or text when your glasses are ready for collection. At this point we request that you visit the Tesco Opticians branch that you nominated when ordering. Please make sure that you bring your valid prescription (less than two years old) to the store when you visit to collect your spectacles.
Lenses and coatings
Are the lenses glass or plastic?
Plastic – they are light and durable, the modern material of choice. We do not sell glass lenses.
What tints do you offer?
We offer three sunglass shades, light, medium and dark. Tints come in brown and grey.
Do you sell lenses that go dark in the sun?
We offer lenses that go darker in sunlight. These are called Photochromic lenses. They are available in either grey or brown. When you choose your frames and lenses, Photochromic lenses will appear as an option if they are available for your particular lens choice.
Do you sell Bifocals?
We do not currently sell bifocal lenses, but they are coming soon.
I want Varifocal lenses. Do you sell them?
Not yet – but watch this space.
My prescription mentions 'Prisms'. Can you supply these?
Sorry – not at the moment.
Can you supply thinner lenses for prescriptions with higher powers?
Yes – we can for single vision glasses and the price is shown just above the 'add to cart' button in the 'optional extras' section on each page of frames.
Can I have scratch-resistant coating applied to the lenses?
Yes, all our lenses are coated to reduce scratching in use. We supply this coating free of charge.
Can I have anti-reflective coating applied to the lenses?
Yes, just select the option at the bottom of the order page and we'll add the coating. It costs just £30 extra. Anti-reflective coating reduces reflections when looking at or through the lenses, which allows your eyes to be more visible, so you look much nicer.
Help and advice
What should I do if I realise I've made a mistake when ordering?
Contact us immediately (by phone or email) to let us know. If you contact us within 24 hours we may be able to cancel your order as the lenses will not have been made yet. We'll give you a refund or alternatively you can exchange your glasses for a new pair of the same value. We do not offer refunds for the cost of postage and packaging. See our terms and conditions for full details. This refund policy is unique to purchases via Tesco.com and does not apply to purchases made at Tesco Opticians.
